Recipients of the Navigator Award demonstrate outstanding teaching and motivational skills, are clinically and technically skilled in their profession, and share their experiences and viewpoints willingly. They are supportive, guiding, and reassuring, and share their network of relationships and contacts as resources. With excellence, they demonstrate and practice the goals and ambitions of the professional nurse as a role model for others.


To recognize a NANN member who consistently demonstrates the power of mentoring as a force for decreasing turnover rates, fostering camaraderie, and for the positive growth and development of new nurses into the specialty of neonatal nursing.

Selection Criteria
The nominee should:

  • Demonstrate excellence in mentoring others in the neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Utilize interpersonal, motivational, and teaching skills in the mentoring process.
  • Facilitate team building, staff growth and development.
  • Promote a climate of learning for the novice and passion for educating that encourages, challenges, and inspires a model of professionalism for everyone.
  • Demonstrate consistent excellence in practice.

Winner Receives

  • Complimentary conference registration
  • $500 stipend to be applied to hotel and travel costs
  • $250 honorarium
  • Trophy


  • A nominee's CV must be submitted along with the application.
  • A nominator's letter must accompany the application. The letter should clearly address the selection criteria, provide specific examples of how the nominee has demonstrated these qualities, and describe the impact the nominee has had on staff and the unit.
